Man lured into robbery through Instagram

Police are searching for a robber who lured a Destrehan man to Carriage Lane with promises of a cell phone before pulling out a gun and taking the victim’s money.

The victim had posted an ad on Instagram looking to purchase a cell phone. He was contacted by another man who asked the victim to meet him on the corner of Carriage Lane and Dunleith Drive in Destrehan.

When the 19-year-old arrived to purchase a cell phone, the robber entered the victim’s vehicle, pulled out a gun and demanded money. When the victim complied, the robber drove off.

Capt. Pat Yoes, St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said this type of crime was unusual for St. Charles Parish. He advised against purchasing electronics off of the street.

“We see from this incident the potential risk,” Yoes said. “In addition, there is no way to know if the items being purchased are not stolen property.”

Yoes said if someone does intend to purchase items from someone they don’t know, it should be done in a highly visible location during daylight hours.

The robber was described as a black male who was wearing a black hoodie and black pants. The suspect had dreadlocks and was driving a silver Cadillac four-door. The vehicle’s year is unknown.

Anyone having any information about the crime is asked to contact Det. Brad Walsh with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985)783-1135 or (985)783-6807.
