Luling murder suspect shoots himself

Standoff ends, man in critical condition

Gary Farrel, 52, of Luling Avenue, shot himself after a standoff with police that lasted hours on Wednesday afternoon, authorities say.

The Luling man called the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m. and allegedly told them he had killed his girlfriend and left her body inside a parked car at the St. Charles Parish Hospital. He then barricaded himself inside a shed behind his home on Luling Avenue and refused to come out.

After a standoff that lasted several hours, officers shot tear gas into the building. When they entered the building, they said Farrel was already down and had apparently shot himself. Farrel is now in critical condition and was being transported to University Hospital, authorities said.

At the hospital, authorities found a body in the backseat of a car in the parking lot. The victim has not been identified.

The residential area between River Road, Luling Avenue and St. Charles Boulevard had been closed and the residences near the stand-off location were evacuated. School children who live near the area were held at the schools until their parents could be notified.
