Luling man pleads guilty to shooting man at Birdie’s

Sentenced to two years in prison

Juan Parnell, a Luling man arrested March 8 of last year on charges of shooting a man outside of Birdie’s Food and Fuel in Luling, was recently sentenced to two years in prison on the charge of aggravated battery.

Parnell, 32, and of 604 Paul Frederick St. in Luling, pleaded guilty to the charge, which was lessened from the earlier charge of attempted second degree murder.

The sentence is not suspended and he receives credit for time served since his arrest.

Parnell is serving his sentence at Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, Parnell and the victim crossed paths at Birdie’s on March 7 of last year.

The two had been in a previous argument, according to court documents.

Upon this person, Parnell reportedly began verbally abusing the victim, who exited the store and began to walk away. At that point, police say Parnell brandished a gun at the victim and fired, wounding him in his right abdomen and left arm.

The victim was able to positively identify Parnell as the shooter in a photo lineup and police arrested Parnell the day after the shooting.
