Luling man armed with gun, Molotov cocktail arrested after shooting in Ashton Plantation

Armed with a gun, Molotov cocktail and a can of gasoline, a Luling man went to his inlaws’ house around 4 a.m. today (Aug. 2) and shot his father-in-law in a gunfight between the two, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

William A. Canada, 30, of 122 Lake Carolyn Drive, Luling, went to the residence at 103 Lac Verret Drive, also in Luling, in the affluent Ashton Plantation Subdivision, where his estranged wife was staying and fired numerous rounds into the residence, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Pat Yoes.

Canada has been arrested by police and charged with three counts of attempted murder.

He apparently had a gun along with a Molotov cocktail and can of gasoline.

Yoes said his estranged wife along with her parents were in the residence when he fired numerous rounds and the father-in-law returned fire, at least three rounds, before he was struck in the chest.

Canada fled the scene and was arrested just outside of the subdivision. Yoes said he will be booked this morning.

The father-in-law, 59, was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans where he was reported in stable condition.
