Ladies of Laughter – touring comedy show makes way to Luling

Caroline Rhea

Those in the mood for some laughs might find their way to the Lafon Performing Arts Center Friday night.

That’s because the center will host the comedy show Funny Women of a Certain Age, the brainchild of longtime comic Carole Montgomery that became a Showtime special in 2019. The show begins at 7 p.m.

Its television premiere was Showtime’s highest rated debut show in 2019. Two more specials followed and Friday night’s show is part of the national tour that’s spun off of it.

Montgomery stars on stage with Caroline Rhea and Leighann Lord, women who paved the way for many of the female standup comics today. Rhea is best known for her role as Hilda Spellman in the 1990s and early 2000s ABC sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and has been featured in numerous TV and film productions. Lord has performed on Comedy Central, HBO, The View, and in the Netflix Def Comedy Jam 25th Anniversary Special.

Montgomery has been featured in over two dozen television shows and has worked for more than 40 years as a comic, producer, writer, director and actress. She came up with the concept of Funny Women of a Certain Age from a few different angles. Montgomery has noted that when she began as a comic, one would rarely see two female comics working on the same show – something still the case, in her view, many years later even as many more female comics work today.

She also found the way female performers are portrayed on television after reaching the age of 50 disappointing. Combine those things with a desire to collaborate and create with her friends on stage, and a successful showcase was born.

Tickets can be purchased on the Lafon Center website for $35.
