Petition started in Ama: Residents plan to keep out mobile home park
Ama residents are opposing the rezoning of the property next to St. Mark’s Church, located at 10971 Highway 18 owned by Patrick McEvoy.
A group of residents have started a petition to ensure that owner doesn’t build multiple single family houses on it, and they plan to present the paperwork at the next St. Charles Parish Council meeting scheduled for August 20.
According to minutes obtained from the Planning and Zoning Commissioners meeting, the property is too dense to build 92 to 150 homes, according to McEvoy’s original proposal that was submitted to the planning board.
The population of Ama is estimated at 1200 and the community hopes to gather at least 500 signatures.
According to the petition, five of six present committee members agreed with the Ama residents and voted to deny McEvoy’s rezoning classification, August 2.
“As noted by the planning and zoning commissioners, at the meeting, a request for re-zoning to single family homes by McEvoy is not a good one, there is no doubt that the final plan of the developer will not be in keeping with the rural environment of Ama,” the petition reads.
Cops search for clues in death of St. Rose woman
On August 13 at 1:02 pm deputies report that they responded to an emergency call at 134 4th St. in St. Rose and found Hilda Warren, a 70-year-old black woman, bleeding and unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead and an autopsy discovered a gunshot wound to the head. Anyone with information about this case should contact Detective Eric Brass at 985-783-1135.
Operation Heat Wave: 32 arrested in massive drug bust
St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division arrested 32 parish residents for drug violations after an undercover raid called Operation Heat Wave.
“We’ve been working on this operation for several months,” Sheriff Greg Champagne, told the Herald-Guide.
“We get a lot of information from tips turned into our drug hotline and through anonymous emails,” he said.
“Several of the arrests in these cases were made based on tips.”
Champagne said that undercover police officials helped to move the operation along.
“Undercover officers drive around and make drug buys in a cross section of the parish,” he said.
“Narcotics investigation is always ongoing, we also use detectives from outside the parish, to pose as undercover,” he continued.
“Drugs are problem everywhere, we do see a lot of repeat offenders,” he said.
“A lot of people contact us with tips, but they need to be patient, have to be patient,” Champagne told the Herald-Guide.
“People call up and want an arrest tomorrow,” he continued.
Champagne said an area has to be checked out and addicts have to develop a trust with the undercover person.
“Addicts tend to deal with a limited circle of drug users, and seldom sell to anyone that they don’t absolutely know,” he said.
“It requires patience to make arrests like these,” he continued.
“We are taking our time to do things right.”
“To date we have arrested over 250 individuals for drug violations this year and have seized a sizeable amount of illegal drugs,” he said.
The round-up is the result an investigation conducted by the Special Investigations Division of the Sheriff’s Office into illegal drug sales throughout the parish.
