Ban cockfighting once and for all, says State Rep. Mike Strain

State Rep. Mike Strain has filed legislation to ban cockfighting in Louisiana, a similar measure that was defeated last year.

Strain pre-filed House Bill 101 which prohibits anyone from promoting or conducting a cockfight, on either commercial or private property.

“It is time Louisiana joins the rest of the country in banning this blood sport,” Strain continued.

“Now that New Mexico has banned cockfighting, we are the lone state that allows it,”

“Under my legislation, anyone convicted of organizing or promoting a cockfight may be fined not more than $1,000, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.”

The bill has been tentatively referred to the House Agriculture, and Rural Development Committee.

River Region Drama Guild puts on Bicentennial play at DHS

As of press time, tickets are still available for the River Region Drama Guild’s St. Charles Bicentennial play. Performance will be Sunday April 1st, 2007 at Destrehan High Auditorium at 2:00 PM.

There is no charge for admission to the performance however admission is by ticket only and tickets are limited.

Apply now for weatherization assistance for your home

St. Charles Parish Department of Community Services will accept applications for the 2007-2008 Weatherization Assistance Program beginning April 2, 2007.

The program provides funds to weather proof homes.

These upgrades will improve heating and cooling efficiency and reduce energy cost for homeowners.

You can apply at the St. Charles Parish Community Services Office located in the Courthouse Annex Building, 14564 River Road, in New Sarpy.

Sen. David Vitter hosting a town hall meeting in Hahnville

U.S. Senator David Vitter will a host a town hall meeting in Hahnville, on Monday, April 9, to offer citizens an opportunity to share their views on current issues.

The senator will discuss improving health care, growing good jobs in Louisiana, fighting crime, lowering prescription drug costs and other crucial issues impacting families in Louisiana.

Vitter hosted a town hall meetings in all of Louisiana’s 64 parishes.

The meeting will be held in the Parish Council Chambers, second floor of the courthouse on 15045 River Road from 5:00p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
