Herald-Guide hires new Lifestyles editor

Kyle Barnett has joined the staff of the St. Charles Herald-Guide as staff reporter and Lifestyles editor.

Barnett was most recently an intern and freelance reporter for broadcast wire service Metro Networks in Springfield, Ill. where he completed his master’s degree in Public Affairs Reporting at the University of Illinois-Springfield in the summer of 2011.

“I learned a lot in my time away, but I was ready to come back nearly as soon as I left,” Barnett said. “There is no other place I enjoy as much as southeast Louisiana.”

Although he was raised in the Ozarks in southern Missouri, Barnett’s hiring by the Herald-Guide is a homecoming of sorts. His first job in journalism was in 2007 covering the River Parishes as an education reporter for L’Observateur. After leaving L’Observateur in early 2008 Barnett served as an academic editor at Tulane Medical School and was an executive staff member at Tulane University’s radio station WTUL-FM where he helped expand the station’s news programming and also served as editor-in-chief of its quarterly music and culture magazine The Vox.

“I’m happy to be back in St. Charles Parish,” Barnett said. “I’ve always enjoyed this community and I can guarantee I’ll continue to produce high-quality journalism expected of a true community newspaper.”
