Help cops find fugitive who killed New Sarpy man

A New Sarpy man was shot and killed on Mother’s Day in LaPlace and police are still searching for a suspect, according to the St. John Sheriff’s Office. Brandon Woods, 33, had gone to a picnic around 10:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Cardinal Dr. in LaPlace to find his sister’s boyfriend, said Maj. Mike Tregre of the St. John parish Sheriff’s office.

Authorities said Woods had to come between his sister and her boyfriend during an argument at a Mother’s day parade in St. Charles.

The couple later attended the picnic in LaPlace on Cardinal Drive where they once again got into an altercation before leaving. The boyfriend was treated for injuries at River Parishes Hospital and released, according to Tregre.

Woods then allegedly drove to the picnic with his nephew and two friends to find the boyfriend, Tregre said. After exiting the vehicle, Woods got into an argument with several people at the picnic before gunfire broke out.

Tregre said there was evidence of a gun battle although it’s unclear whether Woods had a gun on his possession or not.

Woods was shot several times and was taken to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace where he died shortly after, Tregre said.

Police are still working to identify any suspects in the case.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Detective Cpl. Jerry Fountain of the SJSO at (985) 652-9514.
