Heat’s rising. Splash Park reopening in May

As heat rises, you could be looking for a way to cool down-and, also, in luck.

The Ormond Spray Park in Destrehan is set to reopen for weekends only in May between the hours of 1 pm. and 6 p.m. Beginning June 1, the park will be open for its normal schedule of 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The park is located at 1901 Ormond Blvd. in Destrehan.

Last year, the spray park drew more than 8,600 people, and St. Charles Parish Parks and Recreation Dept. Director Duane Foret believes an even bigger turnout could be on tap in the park’s third year since opening.

“It has created a destination point in our park structure,” Foret said. “It’s a wonderful addition that’s been good for family gatherings and birthday parties. It’s added an element we didn’t have before.”

The spray park will also be available for private rentals — last year, the park was booked for rental 50 times. Rentals can only be made for a two-hour block (10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday) and are $250 for half of the park and $500 for the whole park.

Foret noted the spray park provides a very safe environment for children to have fun and cool off, in part because the activities are supervised to ensure both behavior and that everything works properly.

He also pointed out that with the park’s renovated baseball field also open, people will be able to enjoy the park to its fullest potential.

Beginning the last week in Aug. the Ormond Spray Park will be closed to the public on weekdays. The park will remain open on weekends with normal hours.

The park will close for the season in September.

It is located at 1901 Ormond Blvd. It is closed on Mondays for maintenance. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Children 62 inches or under are allowed entry.
