Hartman’s offers ‘true value’

Will hold a sidewalk sale offering merchandise at ‘garage sale prices’

Hartman’s True Value Hardware has been in business for 26 and a half years — and its owner has been a handyman for far longer than that.

“I’ve done this kind of work all my life,” Charlie Hartman said. “I just like building things. That’s always been my skillset and what I enjoy doing.”

Hartman and his staff have helped their customers deal with issues ranging from home remodeling to car rebuilding since opening in 1990, and that customer base has grown by leaps and bounds over the years.

He’s lived in St. Charles Parish ever since opening his Boutte store — he originally sold from a location right across the street from his current store building, which opened in 1995 — and he said he wouldn’t trade living here for anything.

“We love it out here,” he said. “We love it and we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

Hartman credited his staff with being a big reason his business has remained strong throughout the years.  Knowledgeable service, he continued to stress, is a must when it comes to providing customers with full satisfaction.

After all, one would like to avoid a do-it-yourself disaster if at all possible. The experienced staff at Hartman’s can help mitigate or substantially decrease that risk by offering a few tips and pointers, Hartman says.

“We have the ability to help you with your project, help you find what you need and show you how to do it,” Hartman said. “We have a knowledgeable staff, familiar with all merchandise we sell. We’re glad to help with any project we have. Anyone who wants to come in and just look at what we have, can do that too.

“We help the customers out, we’re not just here to sell them something. I think that goes a long way towards building a customer base.”

One specialty of the Boutte store is its inventory of lawn equipment, including products made by Toro, Exmark and STIHL among other brands. The store also handles repairs and service work for those products, making it a true one stop shop.

“All brands that we sell, we service in house,” Hartman said. “We’re a full-servicing dealer for each of those products. We carry parts for many, many different brands of lawn mowers. We do all our work right here. We don’t send it out.”

Paint is another strength of Hartman’s.

“Our paint is extremely good,” he said. “True Value manufactures their own paint and we’ve been rated quite highly quite a few times.”

Those shopping at Hartman’s Friday, April 29 and Saturday , April 30 can save a little extra.

Hartman’s will be holding a sidewalk sale where items will be sold for “garage sale prices,” something the store has done regularly in the past.

“It’s kind of become an annual thing for us, and we usually get a good turnout,” said Hartman, who noted the sale will be held  in the parking lot outside the store. “It’s going to be items we have discontinued handling but that we have leftover.

“We have spray paint and some other paints, we’ll have some tools and a few electrical things … we’ll be selling spray paint at a dollar a can, for example. The manufacturer on some of these items may have gone out of business, or we changed brands or whatever. It’s all good merchandise, we just need to move it out.”

The sale will be held each day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
