Girlfriend rams car into marsh after fight with boyfriend’s ex-wife

A 26-year-old Avondale woman was arrested on Friday after getting into a fight with her boyfriend’s ex-wife and then allegedly following the victim’s vehicle and ramming it into the marsh at the corner of U.S. 61 and East Harding Street, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The victim had gone to her ex-husband’s work near Ormond Boulevard at 10:30 a.m. to collect child support when she got into an argument with the man’s girlfriend, Crystal M. Powell of 460 Butler Dr. in Avondale. The heated argument eventually turned into a fight and both women had to be separated by employees of the business, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said.

“The victim got in her car and began driving away, but Powell caught up with her and several witnesses saw her ram into the back of the car and then hit it again to push it into a ditch,” LaGrange said. “The car hit a concrete barrier, which caused extensive damage.”

There was also water in the ditch, but LaGrange said it was not enough to hamper the victim and her two passengers’ escape.

One of the witnesses who saw the wreck stopped to make sure the passengers were OK before getting Powell’s license plate number. The witness also tried to corner Powell on Airline Highway, but she rammed into his car and escaped, LaGrange said.

“The license plate came back and we were able to identify Powell as the vehicle’s owner,” LaGrange added. “Several people told us that she worked at McDonald’s, and she had gone back to work.”

Powell was arrested at the McDonald’s on Ormond Boulevard and she was charged with three counts of aggravated battery and aggravated criminal damage to property.

The victim and her two passengers were all treated for minor injuries at Ochsner Hospital.
