Fugitive is on the run after murder in New Sarpy

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is searching for Sidney K. Smith in connection with a homicide that occurred Saturday (April 18) in the 800 block of East Terrace Street in New Sarpy.

A warrant for second-degree murder has been issued for Smith’s arrest.

Described as 5’8″ and weighing 140 pounds, Smith is on the run, armed and considered dangerous, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was last seen wearing gray shorts and a red-and-blue muscle shirt.

At around 9 p.m. Saturday, detectives responded to the scene where Warren Sanders, 28, of LaPlace was found lying unresponsive in a ditch.

According to witnesses, Smith, 22, of East Terrace Street confronted Sanders over Sander’s interest in Smith’s girlfriend who lives nearby.

The encounter ended with Smith discharging an unknown type handgun multiple times at Sanders who died at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

This is the parish’s first homicide for 2015.
