Fugitive in New Sarpy murder in custody

Sidney K. Smith, wanted in connection with Saturday’s murder of Warren Sanders of LaPlace, turned himself in to the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center this evening. Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, said Smith, 22, of East Terrace Street, was arrested and booked on one charge of second-degree murder.

Smith is the alleged shooter in a homicide that occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday (April 18) in the 800 block of East Terrace Street in New Sarpy. Detectives responded to the scene where Sanders, 28, was found lying unresponsive in a ditch.

According to witnesses, Smith confronted Sanders over Sander’s interest in his girlfriend who lives nearby.

The encounter ended with Smith discharging an unknown type handgun multiple times at Sanders who died at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Smith fled and was considered armed and dangerous.

This is the parish’s first homicide for 2015.
