Fit for a Queen: crime drama filmed in Ashton Plantation

Trailers of filming crew in Luling as scenes for USA Network's Queen of the South were shot.

Those Luling residents who call the Ashton Plantation community home might have heard a few curious, loud noises in their neck of the woods last week – but though it may have sounded a bit scary, there was nothing to fear.

The area played host as the USA Network crime drama Queen of the South filmed scenes for its upcoming fifth and final season on March 10. Production for the show took place at 117 Lac Sauvage Drive, and from the sounds of it the Ashton scenes could be action packed, as gunfire was simulated for the filming.

The season is set to premier on April 7, though there is no word on when the Luling scenes specifically will air.

Queen of the South is an adaptation of the Spanish soap opera La Reina del Sur, which itself is based on a novel of the same name written by Arturo Perez-Reverte. The series follows “Queen” Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga), a woman from Sinaloa, Mexico who had a modest background – for a time, at least. After falling in love with a member of the drug cartel, a series of twists and turns result in Mendoza rising to great wealth – and power –  through the drug trade.

That is not the recipe for a peaceful life, of course, and the action and drama surrounding Mendoza only escalates as the series goes on, and she is forced to seek refuge in America when she is targeted by rivals.

The show is filmed by Breakout Kings Productions, LLC.

It was renewed for its final season in August of 2019, but COVID-19 resulted in production being suspended indefinitely in March of last year. April will mark the first airing of a new episode in almost two years, since Aug. 29 of 2019.

In addition to starring as the series lead, Braga also serves as executive producer on the series, which is a co-production between Universal Content Productions and Disney-owned 20th Television.

The series ranked as USA Network’s No. 1 series among adults ages 18-49 and 25-54 during its fourth season.

The New Orleans area made its Queen of the South debut in season 4, when Mendoza made the city her new home base of operations.
