‘The First’ filming in area

Hollywood South making a comeback in 2018

Spotting the “Rover” signs recently posted in Destrehan offered a welcome trail to the latest production, Hulu’s “The First” series, that included St. Charles Parish in its filming locations, as well as indicates film productions are coming back to Louisiana.

Actor Sean Penn is making his first major television role in the drama, which will chronicle the anticipated, near-future first human mission to Mars, as well as interplanetary colonization. Beau Willimon, of “House of Cards” series fame, will direct the drama.

Production wraps up on March 9.

The series is slated to premiere on Hulu and Channel 4 in the UK in 2018.

“The First” represents one of at least three series or films in production in the New Orleans area, including “Green Book,” “NCIS New Orleans” Season 4.

The parish will also be the scene for the movie “ The Highwaymen,” featuring actors Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson that begins production Feb. 12 in the New Orleans area, according to Film New Orleans – the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy.

But there’s more coming up early this year for the New Orleans area, according to Film New Orleans.

A feature film called “The Dirt” begins filming in late February; a second feature film, “Forevermore” beings filming in March; the television series, “Preacher” begins filming its third season on Jan. 31; a feature film called “Eli” begins local production on Jan. 29; another feature film called “Semper Fi” will begin filming on Feb. 1, and the TV series “Claws” has started filming for the second season on Jan. 17.
