Fatal crash in early morning hours

Luling man killed in accident on River Road

Early Thursday morning, on June 29, Louisiana State Police responded to an accident at approximately 4:42 a.m. The incident occurred on LA 18 near Sugarhouse Rd.The accident involved Michael Lauland, a Luling resident, who was driving a 1997 Ford F-150.

Lauland, 39, was traveling eastbound on LA 18 near Sugarhouse Rd. when he lost control of the truck and proceeded to the north side – the levee side — of the road.

In an apparent attempt to correct his wayward path of travel, Lauland then crossed the roadway again, exiting the south side of LA 18 and entering and striking a drainage ditch.

Once Lauland hit the ditch, the Ford flipped, throwing him from the vehicle. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to police reports, speed and impairment are suspected factors in the accident. Troopers noted that Lauland was not wearing a seatbelt.

The accident is still under investigation by Trooper Eugene Narcisse.
