Hankins Development has broken ground for a Family Dollar Store in Hahnville.
Hankins Development has built “a few dozen” Family Dollar stores in Louisiana, Carter said. But the Hahnville store would be the first of its kind for the area.
Carter said construction of the 8,320-square foot store at 15110 River Road will begin as soon as the Mississippi River recedes. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers does not allow construction in the area when the river is above 11 feet high and it’s expected to crest at 16.5 feet this week and then recede.
“Everything is approved,” he said of permitting. “It’s a done deal.”
Carter said it typically takes five months to build and occupy a Family Dollar store from the start of construction.
He said the stores typically provide six to eight permanent positions.
The St. Charles Parish Planning and Zoning Department said the company’s permit for the 42,400 square-foot site has been approved.
“We’d love to do more in the parish,” he said. “It’s been nice working with the people at the parish office to get our permit, but it’s just a matter of finding locations that make sense.”
Hankins Development is owned by Michael Hankins, president and principal. The developer specializes in commercial and retail properties.
Carter said Hankins looked at the Hahnville area several times for prospective locations, but finding land in smaller towns can be challenging.
“The people I spoke to there were excited about not having to travel further to get to a Family Dollar [store],” he said.
