Dog sniffs out suspicious package that caused River Road closure – road is reopened

After a Shell Norco canine handler’s search dog took interest in a package inside of a FedEx delivery truck at the manufacturing plant Friday, an investigation into the contents of the suspicious package led to the discovery it contained drugs, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

River Road between Good Hope Street and Prospect Ave. in Norco was closed for precautionary reasons in the early afternoon, but has since been reopened.

The Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police were alerted to the situation by Shell Norco Manufacturing Complex after what the package was discovered inside a FedEx delivery truck that had arrived for a routine package delivery. The situation began at approximately 11:45 a.m.

The dog sniffed out the situation during an exterior walk of the delivery truck conducted by Shell. The dog showed interest in the vehicle and then the specific package inside the vehicle.

The package was not intended to be delivered to the Shell facility, nor any site in St. Charles Parish. Once the discovery was made, Louisiana State Police were contacted as well as its Emergency Operation Division to assist with the investigation, which concluded the contents of the package was narcotics related.
