Suspect witnessed taking inappropriate photos in park

A New Orleans area man, who was staying with a Luling family, was charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile.The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested John L. Smith III, 60, Metairie, on March 12 after someone witnessed him taking inappropriate photographs of a 6 year-old girl in Monsanto Park.

According to St. Charles Sheriff’s Office spokesman Patrick Yoes, the witness said, “that something did not look right” about the scene. Sensing something inappropriate was going between the girl and Smith, the witness contacted the sheriff’s office.

Following that tip from the witness, parish officials immediately launched an investigation, whereby allegations arose that Smith had inappropriately touched the child in the home.

Smith had been taken in by the Luling family due to Hurricane Katrina, although his relationship to the family is unknown.

After being charged with the crime, Smith was released after posting $12,530. If convicted of the crime, he faces 2 to 10 years and maximum fine of $10,000.
