Destrehan woman arrested after 2-year-old was left in hot car, found dead

A 2-year old was found dead after being left alone in a parked vehicle for nearly six hours, and the girl’s aunt has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide.
St. Charles Parish deputies received a call on Oct. 4 just before 8 p.m., according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, reporting the child was not breathing. When police arrived at the family’s 494 Carolyn Drive home in Destrehan, they found the child, Avril Sanabria, lifeless.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the child was left in the care of her aunt, Lezly Sanabria. That day, the aunt had taken her niece shopping in Metairie, along with the girl’s grandmother. Upon returning to Sanabria’s home, the grandmother went back to her home, while Lezly Sanabria and another person unloaded items from the vehicle.
After unloading the vehicle, Lezly and her friend went inside the former’s residence, which is located on the same property as the grandmother’s, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. James Grimaldi.
Lezly stated she thought the child had gone with her grandmother, not realizing the girl was still inside of the vehicle buckled into her car seat.
After approximately six hours, Lezly Sanabria returned to the vehicle and found Avril unconscious and not breathing. Temperature readings for the day in the Destrehan area showed as high as 97 degrees, with a heat index of 102 degrees outside of the vehicle.
Lezly Sanabria was arrested on Oct. 15.
