Destrehan man gets 7 years for vehicular homicide

A 36-year-old Destrehan man was sentenced to seven years in jail, with four years suspended, after crashing into and killing a Raceland man that was standing near his truck on the side of I-310 on New Year’s Day.

Lucien Dupard was originally charged with DWI and careless operation in addition to vehicular homicide in the death of 32-year-old Howard Folse III, but those charges were dropped as a result of his plea deal.

Dupard was also sentenced to five years of active probation.

The incident began when Folse was driving his 1995 Chevrolet S-10 north on I-310 and veered out of the lane, hitting a crash cushion on the right side of I-310 at US 61, according to Louisiana State Police. Folse got out of his vehicle and was standing near his wrecked truck when he was struck by Dupard’s 2004 Chevrolet Impala, according to the accident report.

Authorities believe that Dupard had fallen asleep behind the wheel and that alcohol was a factor in both Folse’s crash and the subsequent accident that resulted in his death.
