Destrehan man accused of murder set for trial

The trial of a Destrehan man charged with stabbing his live-in girlfriend to death has been set for Feb. 2, 2016.

Bruce Bourgeois Jr. has been indicted by a grand jury on three charges in connection with the case, including second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery.

Bourgeois is accused of stabbing his girlfriend, Mia Waite, to death in July of 2014 in a home the two shared in the 300 block of Madewood Drive in Destrehan. Bourgeois also appears to have lured Waite’s mother, Carmelina Waite, to the home by calling her and asking for a ride.

When Carmelina arrived, she was attacked and her throat was slashed, according to a family member.

Bourgeois allegedly fled in Carmelina’s vehicle.Waite was discovered dead in her bathroom by St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s deputies. Carmelina Waite is recovering from her injuries.

Bourgeois was arrested a day after the murder in Independence, La.

Bourgeois plead not guilty to all charges by reason of insanity. Bourgeois’ defense attorney said his client was “having mental breakdowns in jail,” which led to a sanity commission late in September of 2014.

A psychiatrist and psychologist examined Bourgeois and testified to the commission. After hearing their testimony, Bourgeois was ruled competent to assist his counsel.

A status hearing is set for Nov. 12.
