A Des Allemands man died on Monday after falling into the Mississippi River from a barge he was working on.
Johnathan Luna, 23, fell into the water around 11 p.m. Sunday night near Algiers.
Jeb Tate, public information officer for the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, said that Luna was still in the water when barge workers called the police. Once Luna was brought back on board the barge, EMS workers met the barge at a designated rendezvous point.
“When our medics got on the scene, the barge workers were already treating the patient to the best of their abilities,” Tate said.
New Orleans EMS workers transported Luna in critical condition to the Louisiana State University Trauma Center where he died early Monday morning, according to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office.
Just hours before he fell from the boat, Luna wrote on his Facebook wall: “Back on the boat tonight hope it’s an easy night.”
