Courthouse evacuated after judge receives letter with suspicious powder

The St. Charles Parish Courthouse in Hahnville has been evacuated after an envelope mailed to Judge M. Lauren Lemmon contained a white powdery substance.

According to courthouse employees patiently waiting outside the buildings, the letter was sent from the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona and was received this morning.

The evacuation was ordered at 11 a.m.

The courthouse will remain closed Monday while the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, FBI and Louisiana State Police investigate the envelope.
