Complex manager: Hahnville murder a rarity

The manager at Hahnville’s Raintree Court Apartments, which was the site of a deadly shooting on Dec. 1, said that the murder was an isolated incident and that the complex has never experienced anything like this during her 10-year tenure.

Hahnville resident Ed Raymond, 26, was found on the floor of an apartment at Raintree Court with a gunshot wound to the head. The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said that Raymond helped steal marijuana from a drug dealer who lives in New Orleans, but had traveled to Hahnville to make the sale.

Harry Carraby, who has been charged with Raymond’s murder, allegedly broke into the apartment after Raymond and two other men stole drugs from him. Carraby was arrested shortly after fleeing the scene, and one of the men who police think helped steal the drugs, 19-year-old Dejae L. Smith, turned himself in three days after the crime took place.

Smith supposedly fired shots at Carraby as he fled.

“We have never had anything like this before and it was a completely isolated incident,” Laurie Pheonix, the manager of Raintree Court Apartments, said.

Pheonix, who has been with Raintree Court for 10 years, said that the apartment complex is a safe place to live.

“I have been here for 10 years and we have never had any problems – not even a stabbing or anything,” she said. “None of my residents are worried and we know this was an isolated incident.”

Pheonix said that Raintree Court has no plans to add security and that the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office has been making routine patrols of the area.

St. Charles Parish Spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said that a crime like this is an unusual occurrence not just for Hahnville, but for St. Charles Parish.
