Boutte woman dies in single-vehicle accident on LA 633

A Boutte woman died shortly after 1 a.m. today (April 9) when she was struck by a truck on LA 633.

Louisiana State Police Troop B reported the fatal crash involved Carolyn Bennett, 53, who was walking on the side of the highway with Early Simmons, 49, on the southbound lane of the highway near the intersection of U.S. Highway 90.

A 2013 Dodge Challenger, driven by Dwayne Williams, 22, was traveling south on LA 633 and slowed down when he observed the pedestrians in the road, according to State Police.  As Williams was passing the pedestrians, Bennett reportedly turned in front of the Dodge and was struck by the right front of the vehicle.

Bennett was transported to St. Charles Parish Hospital where she later died.

Impairment and speed are not considered factors of the crash at this time, according to State Police. Williams submitted to a blood test and toxicology results are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
