Boutte mother charged with child abuse after toddler suffers fractures

14-month-old suffered fractures to leg, both arms

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged a Boutte woman with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile on Friday.

A warrant was issued in February for Catherine M. Harvey, 31, after the father brought the toddler to the emergency room in December. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dwayne LaGrange said evidence had to be gathered from the physician who treated the 14-month-old child before a warrant could be issued.

“There was an investigation that took place once this was brought to our attention … we had to wait on reports from the physician,” LaGrange said. “So once that was documented and released to the Sheriff’s Office, we were able to move forward with the arrest.”

LaGrange said the child had been removed from the home and the father was not suspected to be involved.

LaGrange clarified the mother is suspected of inflicting the injuries.

The toddler was brought to the hospital by its father for the leg fracture. Arm fractures, described as “healing” by the Sheriff’s Office, were discovered as the child was being treated.
