Body of missing woman located after three day search

Anna Mae Chauvin

A 71-year-old Destrehan woman reported missing on Dec. 5 was found dead Tuesday afternoon.

The body of Anna Mae Chauvin, who on Saturday was reported missing in Metairie, was found by detectives in a wooded area just north of New Sarpy and just west of Destrehan, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, near a drainage pumping station.

No foul play is suspected, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Her death is believed to be due to exposure to cold weather and outdoor elements, according to St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, but he noted the official cause is pending an autopsy.

Chauvin was diagnosed with dementia. She went missing after a trip with her husband Saturday to Lakeside Mall in Metairie, according to the Sheriff’s Office. That night, she reportedly went into a Shell station for a quick errand, but did not return and was believed to have wandered off.

“It is a very tragic ending and the family of Ms. Chauvin are in our thoughts and prayers,” said Champagne.

Chauvin was located after about a three day search by the Sheriff’s Office and several other local authorities, with the help of a local helicopter company to ultimately pinpoint her location.
