Bicentennial trivia … celebrating SC Parish’s 200th B-day

Enjoy history? Like trivia? You’ve come to the right place. Because each week on these pages, we publish seven new historical tibits in honor of our Bicentennial Year. Here goes:

1. In 1970 a fire gutted the second floor of St. Rose Elementary School. Without funds for repairs the school board puzzled over how to make the repairs.

2. During the 1970s, a political shift brought in a new sheriff and school superintendent.

3. In 1972 a new courthouse was built on the west bank, with an annex on the east bank.

4. The construction of the Taft nuclear plant began in 1970.

5. Major floods courtesy of the Mississippi River in 1973 led to the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway to protect New Orleans.

6. The famous “Red Church” in Destrehan celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1973.

7. Destrehan got the ADM flour mill in 1973. Cost of the plant: $2.5 million dollars.
