A Killona man was arrested Thursday night after a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of cruelty to animals. Rashard C. Poche, 37, was released after posting $280. His bail is set at $2,500.
Poche is accused of throwing a six-pound male Chihuahua against a wall and then stomping on it after becoming frustrated with the dog’s barking, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Poche’s girlfriend was temporarily taking care of the animal for another family member, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said.
After the attack, the dog was taken to Riverlands Animal Hospital in Laplace for treatment. The dog was euthanized after attempts were made to treat it for head trauma, neck injuries and a state of shock.
“I just imagine this really angers a lot of people, a lot of animal lovers, when you have a pet that can’t defend themselves,” LaGrange said.
