Arrest made in Luling shooting of 19-month-old child

A man was arrested in relation to a shooting in Luling that wounded and hospitalized his 19-month-old nephew.

Sterling Paul, 24 and of 2101 Richland Ave. in Metairie, was arrested on suspected involvement in the April 15 shooting that took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Allie Lane.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, an officer was patrolling the area when he responded to the sound of a gunshot. The deputy was then flagged down on Allie Lane by the child’s frantic mother, who was carrying the injured boy, who was struck in the leg by the shot.

First responders arrived and began life-saving measures for the boy, who was taken by helicopter to University Medical Center and was listed in guarded but stable condition.

Police say Paul was at the residence and involved in an argument with his sister, the boy’s mother. After the altercation, Paul exited the home and allegedly shot a gun back inside, striking the child. Police took Paul into custody and confiscated two firearms believed to be involved in the incident.

He is being held at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center with a $145,000 bond.
