Area groups setting up funds to help Cpl. Burt Hazeltine and his family

Three area organizations have set up funds to accept donations for St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office’s Cpl. Burt Hazeltine who was shot Thursday (April 16) in an apparent ambush shooting while directing school traffic.

Hazeltine was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans where he was listed in stable, but guarded condition.

The St. Charles Parish Bar Association is accepting donations with checks made payable to St. Charles Parish Bar Association – Burt Hazeltine Fund, 13551 River Road, Luling, La. 70070.

Also, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office and the St. Charles Fraternal Order of Police No. 15 have joined together to establish a benefit fund through the Louisiana FOP Foundation. Hazeltine was shot several times while directing traffic in a Paradis school zone shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday morning. Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, described the shooting as an ambush.

The man arrested in connection with the shooting of Corp. Burt Hazeltine has been identified as 56-year-old John Paul Devillier, of Gulfport, Miss.
