Area crime falls 8.5 percent from same period last year

There were a total of 567 crimes reported in St. Charles Parish for the third quarter, which represents the second lowest overall total in 12 years and is an 8.5 percent decrease from the same period last year.

Overall, there have been a total of 1,648 crimes reported throughout the first three quarters, which puts the parish on schedule to have its lowest amount of reported crimes since 1996, when the number topped out at 2,834 for the year. These first three quarters also represent a 5 percent drop from the same period in 2006.

And while the individual numbers are down in rapes, burglaries, theft, and auto theft, the parish has already had 35 robberies this year, compared with 40 total last year and only 24 in 2005.

The index does not include drug-related crimes.
