Animal shelter in running for $10,000

The St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter/Humane Society has a chance to win $10,000 in a national contest that uses votes from around the community to determine the winner.

The contest, which is called “America’s Favorite Animal Shelter,” is sponsored by Care2, an online social network site, and Adopt-a-Pet.com. The winner of the contest is determined by the number of local citizens and supporters that vote for their shelter. Parish residents can vote for the animal shelter by going to http://www.care2.com/animalsheltercontest/75671. So far, the shelter has 87 votes.

In addition to the grand prize of $10,000, Care2 is awarding $3,000, $1,000 and two prizes of $500, respectively, to the four runners-up.

Along with awarding animal shelters or organizations some much needed cash, the contest aims to raise awareness about the importance of supporting pet adoptions and taking action to save homeless animal’s lives. All participating animal shelters and rescue groups, including the parish’s animal shelter, are a part of the Adopt-a-Pet.com network.

“That money would help us,” Angie Robert, the director of the parish’s animal shelter, said. “The humane society is a non-profit organization that lo+ses money on every animal that they adopt. I know that we spend much more in veterinary care than the $60 we adopt the animals for.”

Robert says the money could help alleviate some of that.

“The money could be used to spay and neuter animals and just for the general upkeep of the facility,” she said.

Because of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, the shelter hasn’t had many pet adoptions recently.  In fact, there were only 20 pet adoptions last month. And while the adoption number may have been small, the shelter took in plenty of stray animals that either escaped or were left unattended because of the storms.

“We commend groups like the St. Charles Parish Humane Society and the parish’s animal shelter, which support the welfare of animals,” Randy Paynter, the CEO and founder of Care2 said. “We are excited to work with Adopt-a-Pet.com’s network of shelters and rescue groups to support a cause that really matters to our members and so many others – the welfare and adoption of animals.”

The contest began on Sept. 22 and will run through Nov. 1. Along with the cash prizes from Care2, Adopt-a-Pet.com is awarding prizes of $1,000 at random each week during that period to ensure that every shelter and rescue group has a chance to win.

Shelter supporters can also invite their friends and encourage them to vote. The results of the votes are updated in real-time, and the 20 people who recruit the most friends to vote will receive a $50 gift certificate.
