Ama murder linked to drug deal gone bad

A potential narcotics deal turned into an argument, a physical altercation and, eventually, a murder in Ama Oct. 13, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Rodney Naquin of Waggaman was arrested Saturday night after being questioned by police. He has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Jassen Robert of Ama.

Naquin, 25, of 349 Hells Drive, was apprehended by detectives “after working around the clock” to locate the suspect, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was charged in connection with the murder and also charged with one count each of armed robbery and obstruction of justice.

Robert, 48, was found stabbed to death inside a home in the 100 block of Robert Street.

SCSO spokesperson Capt. Patrick Yoes said detectives believe Naquin went to Robert’s residence to buy prescription medication.

“They got into an argument and then began to fight,” Yoes said, also noting Naquin was developed as a suspect, in part, from surveillance footage collected from the residence.

The obstruction charges, Yoes said, stem from Naquin allegedly destroying evidence.

Deputies were called to the medical emergency at 5 p.m. Oct. 13. On arrival, they found Robert dead from stab wounds, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Naquin is being held in Nelson Coleman Correctional Center under a $500,000 bond.
