A Montz man was attacked by an alligator Sunday night after allegedly fleeing from police during a traffic stop and DWI investigation.
Victor Rivas, 40, was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later charged with DWI and resisting an officer. Police obtained additional warrants for hit and run and careless operation in connection with a Jefferson Parish crash.
Louisiana state troopers responded to reports that a Toyota Supra was driven recklessly on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Blvd. in Jefferson Parish and that the Supra struck a concrete barrier and sustained a tire blowout.
Troopers found the Supra traveling south on I-10 in St. Charles Parish and made a traffic stop. According to state police, troopers observed signs of impairment before Rivas fled on foot and jumped from the elevated portion of the interstate into the swamp below.
Troopers and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies searched for Rivas, who was found walking along U.S. Hwy. 61. According to state police, Rivas fled again into the swampy area once approached by police and was attacked by an alligator. He reportedly sustained injuries to both of his arms.
Police say Rivas continued to flee despite the attack and his injuries, but with drone assistance he was found and arrested.
The state police issued a warning of the consequences of impaired driving following the incident on its Facebook page.
“Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences,” the message noted. “Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver. Louisiana State Police appreciates the strong partnership and coordinated efforts of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in bringing this incident to a successful resolution.”
