7-year-old killed in suspected impaired driving crash

Driver accused of vehicular homicide

A seven-year-old Luling girl was killed around 5 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 24) when she was ejected from a vehicle that ran off LA 18 east and overturned several times.

Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated the single vehicle fatal crash at Avalon Place in Hahnville that claimed the life Alina R. Ezzo of Luling.

Islam S. Ezzo of Hahnville was driving a 2013 GMC Terrain at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road to the right, according to State Troopers’ initial investigation.

Ezzo’s vehicle struck several trees and overturned. Alina Ezzo was not properly restrained and ejected during the crash, according to State Police. She was transported to St. Charles Hospital and pronounced dead.

Islam Ezzo was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Impairment is suspected and blood was taken from Islam Ezzo. Toxicology analysis will be completed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, according to State Police.

Islam Ezzo has been placed under arrest for vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injuring and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. State Police say more charges are possible.

The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists that witness possibly impaired drivers and/or hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
