Wetland Watchers featured nationally

Harry Hurst Middle Wetland Watchers teacher Barry Guillot recently hosted Brooke Ross, Editor of Weekly Reader News, on a local trip with the student environmental group.

Ross and the group explored the impacts of the BP Gulf oil spill on the people and wildlife of Louisiana from a kid’s perspective for a story in the national kids’ magazine that will come out in the September back-to-school issue of Weekly Reader magazine.

The trip included 14 students ranging from 4th grade to 9th grade representing five schools from St. Charles Parish and two schools from Lafourche Parish.

The group visited the shores of Lake Pontchartrain and the tanks of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas where aviculturalist Tom Dyer, pictured above, gave students a close-up view of some of the sea turtles rescued from the oil spill.
