UNO professor lectures engineering design class

On Sept. 29, Gianna Cothren, professor of civil engineering at the University of New Orleans, gave a college-level lecture to the Satellite Center’s engineering design class.

The lecture was on methods of analysis of engineering truss designs. This is a typical lecture in her sophomore-level engineering statics class.

Students kept pace with her lecture and understanding the theory. They also worked example problems in the “Method of Joints and the Method of Sections” analysis techniques.

Cothren’s lectures gave students a taste of what a college engineering course is like. They were encouraged by the success they had in understanding the concepts and the detailed analysis presented.

Students will use these same techniques in the bridge design project they’re currently working on.
