Teachers undergo intensive summer training

Thirteen teachers from St. Charles Parish Public Schools recently completed school-to-career summer internships at several local industries in order to bring their experiences back into their classrooms.

The teachers learned about the various careers associated with each industry including the organization of the industry, the education and/or certification requirements, the occupational outlook, the working conditions and advancement opportunities. Following the internships, the teachers and counselors developed lesson plans integrating their experiences, the district learner goals and the Common Core curriculum. The participants also earned continuing learning units.

The lesson plan titles ranged from “Investigating Health Careers: St. Charles Parish Hospital, A Microcosm of the Community”, “Customer Service Skills Externally and Internally in the Health Field”, “Government and Law Enforcement”, “The Sheriff’s Department Involves More Than Becoming a Patrol Officer”, “Bilingual Career Opportunities”, “Agriculture Then and Now”, “Petro-Chemical Employment Skills” and “How Does Monsanto Run”.

The hosts of the summer internships were Monsanto, St. Charles Parish Hospital and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.  Career development facilitators, Aurora Romero at Hahnville High School and Stefanie Ward at Destrehan High School, assisted the teachers in the development of the lesson plans.
