BOUTTE – Hahnville High School students in Melinda Rappold’s Family and Consumer Science classes made Sugar Babies using a 5 lb. bag of sugar as the base of the baby to help students better understand the responsibilities involved in the day-to-day care of a baby.
The students were to care for a “sugar baby” for several days by having it with them in class for three days.
This care involved providing the proper care and attention for the babies and ensuring its health and safety at all times.
This is a fun project, but it had a serious purpose.
By learning the responsibilities of parenthood today, students become a better prepared and informed parent in the future.
Along with the care of the baby, students are learning many aspects of child development and child care such as the tasks and skills of caregivers, special problems teen parents face, and the importance of play.
