Students beautify BCA for Earth Day

Students in the River Afterschool Program at Boutte Christian Academy got the chance to learn how to take care of their surroundings on Earth Day, April 22.

Pre-kindergarteners through 6th graders were taught how to plant flowers and bushes and how to weed and mulch a garden.

Darla Brown, director of the River program at BCA, said that she came up with the idea in order to make the kids feel like they have ownership in the school grounds and to teach them how to take care of their environment.

Brown said that the kids seemed to enjoy it even more than she anticipated.

“The kids loved it. In fact, the next day when they were getting out of their cars in the car pool, they were making sure that their parents saw their work,” Brown said. “They want to do this all the time now.”

This is the first year at BCA has celebrated Earth Day in this way, but Brown said it will be an ongoing project in future years.
