The St. Rose Volunteer Fire Department will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 13, in support of St. Rose’s Mack Saucier in his fight against cancer.
Saucier, who is battling cancer for a second time after besting the illness at the age of 19, discovered a lump in his throat last year. Doctors identified it as metastatic andenocarcinoma, which meant not only was the growth in his throat cancerous, but it was likely it stemmed from cancer in another part of his body.
Since then, it’s been determined Saucier has stage four colon cancer, and is once again undergoing chemotherapy in an attempt to get better. Saucier’s wife, Rochelle, has battled cancer herself, a survivor of a recent fight against the disease.
Their consecutive battles against illness has drained the father and mother of two of their finances.
The meal will be served at lunch, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will include spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread and dessert. The cost is $8, and the department will deliver orders.
“We try to give back to the community, and when we saw this story, we felt we could help,” said volunteer fire department spokesperson Bonnie Hymel. “It’s the kind of thing that really hits you. They’ve got kids and have lost everything.”
Hymel said there will also be a small eating area set up at the station for people to stop by and enjoy their meal.
