St. Charles Women’s Club awards $30K in scholarships, nonprofit contributions

12 students receive $1K scholarships

The St. Charles Women’s Club (SCWC) members raised $32,000 for scholarships and nonprofit organizations.

Ormond Plantation was the setting for the annual disbursement ceremony.

SCWC Civic Chairwoman, Carolyn Boyd announced the community recipients, their organization and the intent for the monies received.

This year’s recipients included:

• Junior Achievement (St. Charles Parish Schools)

• Pink Ladies Volunteers

• St. Charles Borromeo Ministry of Care

• Matthew 25: 35 Food Pantry

• Creative Family Solutions

• River Region Ballet Inc.

• Alpha Daughters of Zion

• St. Charles Museum and Historical Association

• St. Charles Art Guild

•DHS Senior Citizens Christmas Celebration

• DHS  “The Handyman Crew”

• St. Charles Social Concerns

• Arc of St. Charles

• German Coast Farmers’ Market

•Senior Saints Christmas Fellowship at First Baptist of Paradis

• St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office Explorer’s Post 15

•River Road Historical Society

•St. Charles Parish Community Services

• St. Charles Parish Humane Society

•Louisiana Ovation Ensemble

• St. Charles Parish Library

Twelve graduating seniors who reside in St. Charles Parish were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

These students applied for the scholarship, were interviewed and chosen by the SCWC Scholarship Committee, chaired by Rita Varvaro.

Destrehan High School scholarship recipients  include Carly Brown, Matthew Lewis, Jeane’ Naquin, Victoria Ostrowski.

Hahnville High School recipients include Mason Candies, Gabrielle DeBruler, Matthew Fonseca, Britney Hatfield, Camryn Mikesell, Lindsey Schexnaydre and Leah Wilson. Caroline Cannon from Mount Carmel Academy also received a scholarship.

St. Charles Women’s club has been in existence for 51 years.

They serve the community in civic activities and form friendships and social activities for the women of St. Charles Parish.

The club year runs from September through May.  There will be a New Member – Get Acquainted Coffee for those who may be interested in joining the club on Thursday, Sept. 14.
