Soccer is his game, but college will be the gain

Bryson Marretta’s interest in math and science is what got him into robotics at Destrehan High School and what is directing him to soon study mechanical engineering at Mississippi State University.

As a college student, Marretta also plans to continue community involvement, as well as playing his favorite sport – soccer.

Marretta attributed his clear sight of his future to his quality education.

“DHS has not only taught me about myself, but a lot about my future and what I want to do with my life,” Marretta said. When he first came to the high school, he knew what he wanted to do.

Marretta decided he wanted to keep straights A’s, make the soccer team and join other extracurricular clubs.

“I’ve strived to accomplish these things with the support of my peers and family,” Marretta said.

And he did.

Marretta served as three-year captain of the St. Charles Club Soccer Team; two-year captain of the high school’s soccer team and a year as captain of its cross-country team.

He was nominated as the school’s Student of the Year last year, and named WWL Channel 4 News A+ Athlete, also last year.

Marretta made the honor roll all four years at DHS, was named Louisiana Olympic Development State Team last year as well as placed numerous times in Mu Alpha Theta competitions.

Soccer is a natural extension of this student’s love for the game.

“I’ve played my entire life,” he said of the game. “It really means the world to me.”

It’s also about the team and cooperation it creates, as well as “the family it brings together through a team,” he said.

His main goal is mechanical engineering, which took firmer root in his plans with such DHS efforts as the robotics team.

Once he graduates, Marretta hopes to work at a nuclear or automotive plant. He added, “I hope that college will show me the direction I want to go.”

But he credited DHS for showing him the way.

“I think DHS has really prepared me with everything I could ever imagine,” he said. “Every opportunity … every chance to become something great.”
