SCP Council on Aging announces March events

The St. Charles Council on Aging has released its March calendar, which includes events open to St. Charles Parish seniors 60 years and older. The club is also conducting its annual general membership drive this month.

Membership in the COA is open to those who are 21 years are older, residents of St. Charles Parish and interested in the welfare of senior citizens.

Membership is not required for citizens age 60 and older to participate in the services provided by the COA. Call 985-783-6683 for membership forms and with questions.

The complete monthly list of March activities includes:

•COA Fun Day – Fun activities the fourth Friday of each month. This month a Bonco Bash will be held on March 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hahnville Activity Center. Event features games, po-boys and prizes.

•2008 Income Tax Help – AARP is sponsoring free income tax preparation services for qualifying seniors with moderate to low income on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. at the St. Charles West Regional Library in Luling and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Arterbury Building in New Sarpy.

•Annual COA Fishing Rodeo – The COA and the St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation invite you to attend the annual COA Fishing Rodeo on Wednesday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Bonnet Carre Spillway Park Pavillion in Norco. Fishing poles and bait is supplied. Seniors are asked to bring their own chairs and hats. Call Lauren at 985-783-3008 to reserve a spot.

•Tall Fish Tale Essay Contest – Seniors are invited to write a funny or far out “Tall Fish Tale” ranging from 50 to 75 words. Deadline is March 25. Entries may be handwritten or typed. Call Stephanie at 985-783-6683 for more information.

•Cookie Contest – The COA and the St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation will host a cookie contest on Wednesday, April 1 at the Bonnet Carre Spillway recreation area in Norco during the organization’s annual fishing rodeo. •Scrap Booking and Calligraphy Art with Anne Hymel – This group meets every Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the New Sarpy Activity Center. Call Lois at 985-764-2412 for more information.

•Travel Club – This month’s Travel Club will take a Pleasure Bend Boat Tour of Lac Des Allemands and visit Trudy’s Restaurant in Kramer on March 11. Call 985-783-6683 for reservations. The club is also accepting applications for its April trip where seniors can take a St. Charles Avenue Street Car Tour on April 8.

•Exercise Classes – The COA sponsors exercise classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fitness Club located at 13117 Highway 90 in Boutte.

•Literary Circle of Friends – This group meets every Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 145 Angus Dr. in Luling. Call Sharyn at 985-785-1981 for lunch reservations and transportation. Here are the March meeting details: March 6 – word games, March 13 – Scrabble contest, March 20 – Group story incorporating three key words, – March 27 – Easter Egg Word Hunt game and dying eggs.

•Senior Dancers Expo Group – The COA hosts line dancing ever Wednesday at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hahnville center. Instructed by Judy Goutierrez. Call 985-783-6683 for transportation reservations.

•Bidding 500 Card Club – This card club meets every Monday at the Hahnville Center with a beginners workshop from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and avid team play from noon to 3 p.m. Call 985-783-6683 for transportation.

•Blood Pressure Checks – Wednesday, March 11 at the Norco center at 10:30 a.m. and the New Sarpy center at noon. Wednesday, March 18 at the Hahnville center at 10:30 a.m. and the Luling center at noon.

•Luling Center Coffee Social – The first Monday of the month from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

•New Sarpy Center Craft Workshop – The first Thursday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

•COA Cafe – Food, friends and fun the fourth Wednesday of every month. Next meeting is set for March 25 in the COA conference room where the art guild hosts a Marzipan Demo and 3-D Art Workshop.
