Parish hospital one of only 27 in state to get cardiac rehab certification

The St. Charles Parish Hospital became one of only 27 hospitals in Louisiana, and the only hospital in the River Parishes, to be recognized as a nationally certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.

The hospital’s cardiology department recently received its national recertification in Cardiac Rehabilitation from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

The hospital was originally certified in 2004 and this is its first recertification process.

“We are one of a few small hospitals in the state with a Cardiac Rehab Center that offers a comprehensive program,” Laurie Salas, RN, BSN, the hospital’s director of cardiology said. “It is wonderful to see that our hospital is so dedicated to Cardiac Rehabilitation that it allows us to offer such an outstanding program.”

In order to qualify for certification, a hospital must first meet rigid criteria and release extensive information about the department to a national governing society in several main categories to assure compliance with the national standards. These include the standards for exercise and individualized assessment by the American College of Sports Medicine, care planning, and outcome measurement.

All staff members must also demonstrate competency in cardiac rehabilitation methods, and the facility must be emergency ready.

Besides receiving its recertification, the hospital is also in the middle of an expansion that will allow room for a new 3,800 sq. ft. department that will house all new exercise equipment and allow the hospital to consolidate all of the cardiology services in one place.
