Luling native wins big on Ellen

Getting on the Ellen DeGeneres Show was an amazing experience for Luling native Erin Hargis, but what happened next simply brought her to tears.

Hargis, her college roommate and two friends, were going to a conference in Los Angeles, so they went online and signed up for tickets to the show for Nov. 8.

They didn’t just get the tickets – it was for Ellen’s 2,500th show – so they got a CD from recording artist Halsey and a trip to Las Vegas.

But Hargis said the best gift came when she made another trip to Ellen’s show, this time for her 12 days of Christmas. This was something that she had always wanted to do.

And as expected, the 12 days of giveaways was an extraordinary experience for her. They went on the seventh day of the promotion on Nov. 29.

“We got a lot of gifts,” Hargis said. “We got a coffee maker, another trip to Las Vegas, a mattress, alarm system and some gift cards. We got a lot of stuff.”

In both shows, Hargis said they sat in the third or fourth row and got to dance with Stephen “tWitch” Boss, as well as Ellen, who routinely dances her way into the crowd.

“We got to dance with Ellen,” said an overjoyed Hargis. “It was an amazing experience. Once you’re in the audience, it’s just breathtaking.”

This was Hargis’ first time on a talk show and all she could say of Ellen’s show was that it was amazing.

“She’s funny, but she is so giving,” she said. “That is really what I loved about her. I was thankful for what we got, but she encouraged us to give, too, and I really like that.”

Hargis has not taken her Vegas trips yet because she’s a graduate student at Southeastern University.

She’s a freshman studying speech language pathology. She graduated from Hahnville High School in 2013 and from Southeastern in 2016 and now she’s pursuing her master’s degree.

She has a year to take the trips, but Hargis unhesitatingly called getting the gifts a bonus compared to Ellen’s influence on sharing with others.

A star-struck Hargis added, “I think everybody should watch her show.”
