Kyle Bergeron’s family and friends have worked diligently over the past five years to make sure his name is never forgotten. Kyle fought but lost a valiant battle against leukemia and passed away in 2006 at the age of 18.
Kyle left behind his parents, Vicki and Charles, and his twin brother, Logan.
Last month, the family was honored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for their hard work and dedication to finding a cure for cancer. The Society created “The Kyle Bergeron Memorial Award,” which will be given out by Kyle’s family to the top fundraising team each year at the society’s Light the Night Walk.
“The thing that warms my heart the most is knowing that it has his name on it…it’s just going to carry his legacy and his memory on,” Vicki, Kyle’s mother, said. “It’s a huge honor…he deserved this.
Every year since Kyle’s death, the Bergeron family of Luling along with their friends and community supporters have come together as “Kyle’s Krew” to work tirelessly in honoring the memory of their son and friend.
The group was started before Kyle passed away, but his family and friends kept it going even after he lost his battle.
“By the third year we managed to raise $5,000 and we were just blown away that we were able to raise that much,” Vicki said. Last year the team was only a few hundred dollars short of their $10,000 goal, but this year they achieved it.
“This year we did it – we finally did it,” Vicki said.
Over the past five years, the group has raised more than $40,000 in Kyle’s honor in an effort to find a cure for leukemia/lymphoma. In this year alone, they raised more than $10,000.
“I want the people in the community to know that this award would not have been possible without their help,” Vicki said. “Everyone in the community has pulled together to support us in one way or another.”
